![]() Do you get frazzled easily? Is your nervous system overworked? Having trouble sleeping? Lacking in sexual desire? If so, consider the herb Avena Sativa, also known as "Oats".
Avena Sativa can be ingested in three different forms.
![]() Oatmeal The easiest way to ingest oats is through a nice bowl of old fashioned oatmeal. Oatmeal contains both soluble and insoluble fibers. The soluble ones form a viscous gel that helps lower cholesterol and stabilize blood sugar levels. The insoluble fibers binds toxins and moves them out, eliminating constipation. Oatmeal is also mineral dense containing thiamin, magnesium, phosphorous, zinc, magnesium, selenium, and iron. To cleanse your skin add a handful of oats in a washcloth and dip in hot water. Squeeze the wash cloth over skin and you will notice a milky like substance come out. Rub this over the whole body. This will cleanse and rejuvenate the skin. ![]() Oat Straw Oat straw is the name given to the stem of the oat plant when it is still green. To tonify and nourish body, oat straw is my favorite form of Avena Sativa. It is rich in minerals and trace nutrients. It contains silica, magnesium, phosphorous, chromium, iron, calcium, alkaloids, protein, vitamin B complex, Vitamin A and C. To strengthen my bones, ligaments, joints, tendons, and muscles I include Oat straw in an herbal formula. This formula contains horsetail, comfrey leaf, and nettles. This combination makes a vitamin and mineral dense powerhouse! Instead of taking vitamins in isolation, enjoy this nourishing blend. Intake vitamins and minerals the way nature intended. To make an infusion: ![]() I like to use a french press. Take 1 oz of the nettles, oat straw, comfrey leaf, and horsetail blend. Add boiling water until it tops the french press. Let it sit for 2 to 3 hours Press it down to squeeze the plant material Serve...Drink 2 to 3 cups per day Oatstraw Bath (Used for extreme anxiety, Manic episodes, Shock, Grief) Take 2 quart of water and boil. Add 2 oz of Oat straw , turn off heat and cover for an hour or two. Fill bath with hot water. Strain Oat straw and add Infusion to bath water Lay in bath for 3O minutes ![]() Fresh Milky Oat Seeds There is one week in the growing cycle of common oats. That week immature seeds are filled with a special "latex" that looks like milk. This milk is believed to be the greatest remedy for an imbalanced nervous system. They add this latex to alcohol or glycerin and make a tincture out of it. It is a slow acting tonic that calms shattered nerves. It restores peace to people who get easily upset. It is also valuable to those detoxing from drugs or alcohol. Milky Oat Seed is one of my favorite tinctures as it has a delicious sweet taste to it when I put it directly on my tongue. Whenever I am feeling overwhelmed, I reach for this medicine and I immediately feel a sense of calm. Taken in a larger dose it can act as a sedative making it a great natural remedy for insomnia. Another great use for the tincture is if you have social anxiety. Just take a dropper full or two and voila! ![]() Barley Kitchari Kitchari is Ayurveda's foremost healing dish. It combines protein and carbohydrate in a single dish. This particular Kitchari contains barley, which is a mild diuretic and kidney strengthener. This grain is best for Pittas due to its cooling and drying qualities, but since its winter season, we will add some pungent spices to the dish. Serves 3 to 4 Ingredients:
